Classical Martial Arts Canada Mask Policy
Overall policy
As we are running an athletic program our students are required to not wear masks during training or while wearing their dojo uniform (gi) under any circumstances. If you or your child want to wear a mask as you are feeling unwell we would ask that you stay home until you are feeling better or attend one of the outdoor classes. Where children are concerned, masks also pose a serious identification/security risk. As a martial arts organization with our core being self defence, health and wellness, Classical Martial Arts Canada cannot overlook the risks/harm involved in mask wearing hence the creation of this policy.
At the core of training is BREATH
From ancient times it was said that if you were not working with "chi/ki/energy" you were not doing martial arts. The fundamentals of martial arts training involves intensive breath work, that simply cannot be accomplished with your airways being blocked. The bottom line is that if your airway is obstructed you are not doing martial arts.
Rule #1 of self defense is to not harm yourself while learning self defense
The science of masks had been studied long before 2020. We knew that masks were not designed to stop viral particulates, and we also knew that wearing them for long periods of time was harmful to the health of the wearer. It would be completely counter intuitive and dangerous to advise students of our program that masking is "safe and effective" when the reality is the total opposite
The Science Is Clear
Note: this is just a small sample of the science/data surrounding masks/masking. We have not only read/reviewed and stayed up to date with this data since March 2020 but also taken the time to meet with, either in person or over zoom, several of these experts to discuss their findings (including Dr Bridle and Dr Huber). This is in addition to meeting with dozens of frontline nurses and MDs across Ontario, each with at least a decade of experience. Martial arts requires discipline, diligence and discernment and the subsequent application of them. "A warrior choses pacifism, while others are suppressed by it".

A cluster randomized pragmatic effectiveness study conducted at 137 outpatient study sites at 7 US medical centers between September 2011 and May 2015, with final follow-up in June 2016.
